Episode 1 Ted Furey
The first in a new series of radio audio-visual documentaries features the extraordinary life and music of Ted Furey. Ted was the father of the Furey brothers, Finbar, Eddie, George and the late Paul Furey. In the radio documentary, made for Dundalk FM, musicians, neighbours and academics describe a man of many parts-fiddle player, uilleann piper, singer, storyteller and collector. He was a colourful, larger-than-life character who, together with his wife, Nora, cultivated a musical environment at their home in Ballyfermot. This was the bedrock upon which the four brothers built a musical dynasty, variously as The Buskers, Finbar & Eddie Furey and culminating in the highly successful, globe-trotting Furey Brothers and Davy Arthur. Their influence and popularity stretch back to the early 1960s, in the back room of O’Donoghue’s pub, to the present day.
Ted’s legacy is celebrated by contributors with warmth, passion and humour, and the full extent of his musical legacy is presented in this riveting documentary.
Irish Traveller musicians have made a major impact on the development of Irish traditional music in Ireland, and on uilleann piping in particular, throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Their contribution was largely shaped by the characteristics of their cultural experiences as Travellers, a distinct and marginalised minority group within Irish society.
